The Only Time Respect Is of No Value
The only time respect has no value is when I demand it.
When my children were little, I was hard on them. I demanded they respect me. But it didn’t take too long for me to realize that something wasn’t working quite like I had hoped.
So, I asked myself: Why did I demand that my children respect me? It wasn’t so that I would be respected, but that my children would be respectful.
So, I went to my children and explained it to them to help them to understand that if they were respectful, life would be kind to them. If they weren’t, life would be harsh.
I showed them the scripture about honoring your father and your mother, and I told them: It’s not your mother and father that would live a long, blessed life. It’s you that will live a long, blessed life if they were respectful.
So, we don’t need to demand respect. If we do, we remove all the value from it.
If we love people, we must do everything we can to make sure they are respectful--not for us, but for them.
Ephesians 6:2
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise: that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.
Trust God’s Word no matter what.
Keep your eyes on the horizon.
If this doesn’t make sense, read my book,“The Right Fight: How To Live a Loving Life.” It’s all in there.I spent seven years writing it. It will help you set your life on a path of fruitfulness and show you how to live a loving and courageous life instead of a life driven by fear.
