What Did Jesus Mean, “The First Will Be Last”?
First of all, He is talking to John and to James. And they had just asked Him, “What must we do to be first?”
They wanted to be over everyone else and sit at His right and His left.
Jesus said, “You’ve got it all backwards. In the world, those who want to be first so that they can lord over people put themselves first. But in the Kingdom of God, whoever wants to be first must be the servant of all and put themselves last.”
He even said that the Son of Man, talking about himself, didn’t come to be served but to serve.
I would tell you that that even works in life.
So, the only people who follow a boss or someone who demands that they be first are the people who are there to get something or the people who have no other choice.
When we really have a choice, we would choose to follow the one who serves, not the one who demands they are served.
Think about it.
Mark 10:44-45 … and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Trust God’s Word no matter what.
Keep your eyes on the horizon.
If this doesn’t make sense, read my book, “The Right Fight: How To Live a Loving Life.” It’s all in there.I spent seven years writing it. It will help you set your life on a path of fruitfulness and show you how to live a loving and courageous life instead of a life driven by fear.
